We were developing marine navigation system - electronica chart + connections to GPS, radars and other sensors.
Today at TSSJS, I attended Cameron
Purdy's keynote titled C++,
Java and .NET: Lessons learned from the Internet Age, and What it means
for the Cloud and Emerging Languages.

His talk was a retrospective of the trade-offs compared to C++
illustrated by Java, C# and other VM-based programming languages with
Garbage-Collection, scripting languages simultaneously thrived, and what
this teaches...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/javalobby/frontpage/~4/av9U_kyxRTg" height="1" width="1"/>

What would happen, if 60% of your cloud suddenly goes down? Can you rely on the 'fail-over' capabilities of the framework of your choice? What about consistency of your data? How big would be the performance impact of node failures? Continuing our experiments from the previous article, we have decided to give a try the following frameworks:

upon your needs, you can use the following tables to decide which
pattern to implement.

The patterns are split into model patterns and event patterns. Not all
combinations of the patterns make sense, but patterns can be combined

We've come a long way from the WS (SOAP) &lt;-&gt; EJB days. There are
many tools that you can use to develop web services today.

One of the longest running debates I’ve watched in the Maven
community over the years, is how to best support different
configurations for different deployment environments (where “deployment
environment” means a QA environment or staging environment – anything
other than a local developer build). Some people argue simplicity over
the complexity of some of the other options mentioned...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/javalobby/frontpage/~4/5ULFu-xFzTM" height="1" width="1"/>

This is a follow-up to the previous post, CPUs
speed and technology innovations.

As we have outlined in the previous
post, the memory size and computing power available to the average
programmer has increased thousands of times from the first years of his
art, at least in the boundaries of a single machine (network is a common
bottleneck.) References

Effectively Handling Exceptions in Testing Using MagicTest

Unfortunately handling exceptions thrown by
methods under test has always been cumbersome. There has been some
relief in the last few months, as both JUnit and TestNG made an
effort to improve the handling of error conditions:
JUnit 4.7 added rules with ExpectedException
	as one implementation
	TestNG
5.10 added the attribute expectedExceptionsMessageRegExp to the
	@Test annotation

Create Your Own bit.ly Using Base58

Following the example of bit.ly, tinyurl, owl.ly, even coca-cola
has joined the short URL bandwagon. Maybe it's because of Twitter,
maybe the world is focusing on mobile devices or just saving bandwidth.
In any case, it's not that hard to develop your own.

What's Happening in the Java World?

This morning at TheServerSide Java Symposium I attended James Gosling's keynote. Below are my notes from his talk.

The unifying principle for Java is the Network - it ties everything
together. Enterprise, Desktop, Web, Mobile, HPC, Media and Embedded.
The most important thing in the Java world is the acquisition of Sun by
Oracle. James is showing a slide of Duke in a fish tank with...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/javalobby/frontpage/~4/cvHYckLXY24" height="1" width="1"/>

Getting Started With Code Generation With Xpand

Have you heard about model driven software development (MDD / MDSD)
and are thinking &quot;what's all this fuzz about models&quot;? &quot; Why should
models help me to be more productive,&quot; might be another thought you
have.
People have been asking how to leverage models on and off on the web
and in meetings I attended, so I thought I might share this little
tutorial with you. In this...<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/javalobby/frontpage/~4/KWlymHk5KZo" height="1" width="1"/>
