A few more details about the closures announcement for Java 7 surfaced today. According to Stephen Colebourne's blog, Mark Reinhold said that JDK 7 closures won't have control-invocation statements as a goal and it won't include non-local returns. Reinhold also indicated that access to non-final variables was unlikely.

It was announced this morning that closures would be added to JDK 7. Mark Reinhold made the announcement at the Devoxx conference. Before today, Sun could not reach a consensus on the inclusion of closures in JDK 7. Three proposals for closures were submitted to Sun over the last few years and now early reports say the starting point for Java closures will be the FCM v0.5 proposa

Microsoft released version 4.0 of its .Net Micro framework under the Apache 2.0 licence. That's right, the .Net Micro development framework is now open source. The TCP/IP stack and cryptography stack are still closed, however, because a third-party owns the software. The .Net Micro framework is a development and execution environment for small devices.

If Oracle were to sell MySQL to a third-party, who would it be? Many thought Red Hat was the obvious choice with thier JBoss open source division. Reporters have been asking Florian Mueller for his prediction for quite a while now and he finally answered: Novell. However, Novell was introduced to open source by a loan from IBM, and it seems Oracle is unlikely to spin off MySQL to a friend...

Can't stand your tiny 30-inch, panoramic monitor? Why not upgrade with the single-slot Matrox M9188 PCIe x16 graphics card? It drives eight monitors, each at 2560 x 1600 pixels. If eight monitors isn't enough, try combining two for a seamless, 16 monitor desktop.

Ken Auletta, the author of "Google: The End of The World As We Know It", recently revealed that Google was interested in buying the New York Times. Google co-founder Larry Page and CEO Eric Schmidt told Auletta that they had discussed the prospect but decided against it because they thought it might undermine Google's neutrality. Auletta said Google was interested in the Times...

Desirable technical characteristics of PaaS

PaaS can most dramatically improve the IT experience in four areas:
Hosting/operations efficiencyApplication-centric managementDevelopment productivitySecurity
To do so, there are technical characteristics that PaaS frameworks
should eventually exhibit. These are not technical characteristics of a
given PaaS container, they are shared characteristics that go across all container types, no matter...
